They were telling the truth. Completely.

Most people move through daily life with sensory inputs arriving in the background — the hum of the air conditioning, the scratch of a clothing tag, the ambient noise of a cafeteria — processed automatically, filed as unimportant, never reaching conscious attention. Sounds that others barely notice arrive fully, at full volume, demanding full attention. Lights that others find pleasant can feel blinding. Hyposensitivity (under-responsiveness): Sensory input is experienced at lower-than-typical intensity. The child may seek intense sensory input — crashing into things, spinning, pressing hard against surfaces — because their nervous system requires more stimulation to register sensation clearly. This is often misread as hyperactivity or recklessness.
The sensory channels affected can include all eight recognised senses: vision, hearing, touch, taste, smell, proprioception (body position), vestibular (balance and movement), and interoception (internal body signals). An autistic child may be hypersensitive in hearing and touch while simultaneously being hyposensitive in proprioception — needing the firm pressure of a weighted blanket while also being overwhelmed by a fire alarm.

Understanding which channels are affected — and in which direction — is essential for supporting an autistic child well. A response that helps one child (reducing sensory input, creating a quiet space) may not serve another child whose system needs more input to feel regulated.

When sensory differences are not understood — by families, educators, or peers — the consequences accumulate in ways that go far beyond the sensory experience itself.
The "tantrum" misread. A sensory meltdown is not a tantrum. A tantrum is a goal-directed behaviour used to achieve a desired outcome. A sensory meltdown is an involuntary neurological event — the nervous system overwhelmed past its capacity to cope. The child is not making a choice. They are not manipulating a situation. They are in genuine crisis. Responding to a meltdown as though it were a tantrum — with discipline, consequences, or shame — compounds the distress without addressing the cause.
The cumulative toll of masking. Many autistic children — particularly autistic girls, who are significantly underdiagnosed — learn to suppress their sensory responses in public. They learn to tolerate the scratchy fabric, to endure the fluorescent lights, to white-knuckle their way through the birthday party. This process, called masking or camouflaging, is extraordinarily costly. For decades, the dominant narrative around autism was built around deficits: what autistic children couldn't do, couldn't tolerate, couldn't understand. Therapies aimed at making autistic children appear neurotypical. Success was measured by how invisible the autism became.
The autism community — led by autistic adults, researchers, and advocates — has spent the last two decades building a different and more honest framework. The neurodiversity paradigm recognises neurological variation as natural human diversity, not pathology. Autistic ways of thinking, perceiving, and processing are not lesser versions of neurotypical cognition — they are different, with their own distinct strengths and challenges.
For children, this shift in framing is not merely philosophical. It is protective.
A child who grows up understanding that their sensory sensitivity means they experience the world more vividly — not wrongly — builds a very different relationship with their own mind than a child who grows up understanding their sensitivity as a defect. Acknowledging the challenges is important — and so is insisting that the challenges do not define the whole person, or their worth.
Practical Ways to Support a Sensory-Sensitive Child at Home 🏠
1. Identify the specific channels and directions
Not all sensory sensitivity is the same. Before reaching for solutions, observe carefully. Which environments cause distress? Which specific inputs seem most difficult — sound, light, touch, smell, movement? And are the difficulties about too much input, or too little? This information shapes every practical decision that follows.
Occupational therapists with sensory integration training are invaluable partners here — a sensory profile assessment can provide a detailed map of your child's specific pattern.
2. Create a genuine sensory refuge at home
Every sensory-sensitive child benefits from having a space that is genuinely, reliably low-stimulation — not a punishment corner, but a true refuge. This might be a quiet bedroom corner with soft lighting and a weighted blanket, a tent or canopy that reduces visual clutter, or a dedicated drawer of sensory tools (noise-cancelling headphones, textured fidgets, chewelry). The child should help design it. The space should be positively associated — a place they choose to go, not a place they are sent.
3. Prepare for difficult sensory environments in advance

The words used around and with an autistic child from early childhood shape how they understand themselves. Consider the difference between:
"You're being too sensitive again." vs. "Your brain notices more than most people's — that can be really overwhelming sometimes."
The second framing is more accurate, more compassionate, and more useful. It gives the child a way to understand their own experience that doesn't require shame.
6. Build co-regulation before self-regulation
Young autistic children cannot regulate their sensory responses independently. They need a calm, regulated adult to co-regulate alongside them — to sit quietly nearby, to breathe slowly, to model calm without demanding it. Self-regulation is the end goal; co-regulation is the path.
